Snead was one of a kind. Knew how to play to the press, was a gambler all of his days that always liked a little action and one of the best athletes to play the game. Could have played professional baseball and into his 60s could kick the top of a door opening, incredibly flexible. Was a charmer with his southern drawl and ability to make swans for the ladies out of dinner knapkins.
Fellow pros of the 1940s and 50s viewed Sam as the longest Driver of the ball along with Jug McSpaden. Sam had the classic swing all of this playing days.
Never won the US Open which always bothered him. Had many chances and even thought he had won but without scoreboards in the old days miscalculated.
