Description
Reduced from 5 each to 0 each.Crown Dresden is porcelain produced by outside decorators one ofwhich was Helena Wolfsohn who owned a decorator studio. Wolfsohn originallyused the Meissen Royal factory mark on her products, in particular a variationof the Meissen AR (Augustus Rex) mark from 1879 to 1882. By 1883, however, the court had decided that Helena Wolfsohn porcelain decorating studio must refrainfrom using the AR mark and was forced to drop the AR mark in 1883 and thestudio then adopted a crown with ‘D’ scripted beneath it. This piece bears theblue AR mark from 1879 to 1882 on the bottom of the compote.
Her work was typically decorated with pastoral scenes, inspiredby the French artist Antoine Watteau and interspersed with panels of flowers. This piece does have that French inspired look but the design is of colorfulbirds, butterflies and bees with gold gilt accents throughout. The detail ofthe painting on this piece is stunning. It is in excellent antique conditionwith no chips cracks or crazing. There is one very tiny nick on the rim. Thegold gilt does not look to be worn except for some normal very light wear onthe base. The compote is held together with a thin rod and secured with a smallscrew/bolt. It stands 6 ½” tall and is 9” in diameter across the top.
This listing is for one compote. However I do have two of thesecompotes that are almost identical.
I did acquire these and other pieces from an estate where theowners left tags on most of their pieces of where they were purchased. The tagsshowed that many of the items were purchased from Clements Gallery in Chattanooga,TN. Clements Antiques continues to be the premier firm in the Southeast for thebrokerage of fine estates, antique furnishings, and works of art.
