Description

Merchant counterstamp on an 1868 Shield Nickel. "J. Ames/C(ast) Steel", Brunk A-267.  Attributed by R. Rulau to Ames & Co. of Jersey City, NJ, 1870's era,
catalogued as NJ-JC1
.  Other suggest it is more likely related to Ames Manufacturing Co. or Ames Sword Co. of Chicopee, MA.  Perhaps more unusually the C/S appears on a coin that is an obvious strong Doubled Die Obverse. Similar to F-40, however this is the Reverse of 1868 Hub (F-40 uses the Rev. of 1867), State 2, with bases of both C and S broken. As such, apparently not listed in Fletcher. The C/S unfortunately appears in such a location that wear has obscured most of the left hand side of the Shield/Leaves, making ID more difficult. Either way, as a merchant C/S or a Shield Nickel variety, an interesting item.
